Leroy Duffus was the Founder of DCF. After being diagnosed with sarcoma (a rare bone cancer) in 2013, which became terminal by 2015, Leroy Duffus decided he wanted to give something back.
Leroy had many years' experience in both the voluntary and statutory sectors, working with young people and adults. Leroy started to get involved with charities supporting individuals affected by cancer. He soon discovered the lack of local community charities supporting young people, especially those around the patient i.e. children of cancer patients, siblings, carers etc.
Leroy was a people person who worked hard. Leroy had strong family values and he enjoyed having a laugh and interacting with others. He always put other people first and he possessed endless courage and resilience.
In 2017, Leroy decided to form a committee of friends and family who shared his vision: to work together to support young people, and DCF was born. Leroy sadly passed away in September 2018 but his vision and legacy lives on. The Foundation is currently being led by Leroy's younger brother, Brian Duffus.
We are a family-led charity and Duffus is actually our family name! Our founder, Leroy Duffus, set up the Foundation in 2017. Members of his family and friends, alongside new additions to the DCF family, have continued the work that Leroy started, in order to help keep his legacy alive.
Our tree logo represents the long-term growth and support we offer to children and young people. The roots represent the strong foundations we build, and the branches signify our aim to help develop new pathways and opportunities for each person. Together we aim to grow with the young person and their family.
Then
We are often referred to by others as ‘DCF or Duffus Foundation.
DCF originally stood for Duffus Cancer Foundation. When our Founder, Leroy, established the charity, he aimed to support only young people who had been indirectly affected by cancer, by providing them with recreational wellbeing support.
Now
DCF now focuses on supporting all young people’s wellbeing (aged 8-17) by improving their self-esteem, confidence and resilience. As a result of this, the ‘C’ in DCF now stands for Community, meaning our support encompasses a range of different people and their unique needs.
